"Started out decently enough. I always love a slow pace of getting to know everyone and of course the world-building. But I started questioning later why the story had taken place on another planet that you never get familiarized with. There were many races of aliens and species of flora and fauna but the descriptions of all the aliens were so vague it was difficult to discern them.

Also, I very much dislike when authors name multiple alien things from a human perspective and expect us to know what it is. If I would have realized sooner that this was the same author who wrote Dragons of Pern I might have saved myself the trouble and checked the back of the book where no doubt an index might be. Still, I expect a small description of such things in the future thank you very much.

I could tell in just a few short chapters that the words didn't flow well. Sometimes I was unable to figure out who was talking or about what. But still, I was intrigued until about two-thirds of the way thru. Where, I dunno, the Captain started being dumb and the raids became repetitive.

Kris was a not-so-annoying character. Self-sufficient, strong, and capable. But yet again just like I'm most books I've read she gets patted on the back for doing the smallest things that she didn’t even want to do. Also, I was really tired of her saying "down girl" all the time. But could have been because of the era this was written. Of course, I am much harder on women characters because I can that's why. Zainal was alright. Didn't get to learn much about him."
