"A friend recommended that I read this book and I'm glad I listened to his advice. But I'm not sure what I took away from "10 Days that Shook the World" other than a newfound respect for the contingency of history. For the most part, the book is a jumble of hundreds of Russian names and places, of confusion and bizarre situations. It certainly seems like between the violence and chaos in the streets, the shifting loyalties of the army and navy, the remnants of the old government and the many factions of new pretenders to power, the train and telegraph unions, the bankers and the bourgeois, Russia in 1917 was a total mess. It was not at all clear to me that the rise of Bolsheviks was in any way inevitable... but maybe that's my lack of Russian history and inability to keep names straight."
