Jeannette Walls
From the author of The Glass Castle and Hang the Moon—“Walls vividly depicts her astonishing, resilient grandmother with a lightness of touch that is plainspoken yet heartfelt” (Chicago Tribune). Half Broke Horses has transfixed readers everywhere.“Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did.” So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls’s no-nonsense, resourceful, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town—riding five hundred miles on her pony, alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car and fly a plane. And, with her husband, Jim, she ran a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one who is Jeannette’s memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle. Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds—against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn’t fit the mold. Rosemary Smith Walls always told Jeannette that she was like her grandmother, and in this true-life novel, Jeannette Walls channels that kindred spirit. Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa or Beryl Markham’s West with the Night. Destined to become a classic, it will transfix readers everywhere.

"Assuming most people interested in this book have said interest because they read Glass Castle (as was my case), I'd like to say it's good in it's own right but I easily preferred GC and I think part of what makes it better is that it's her own story whereas this is her telling her grandmother's story so it's not the same personal touch "
"glass castle is one of my all time favorite books (top 10) so I had high expectations for this book. And I though it was very good. Ms Walls is a solid writer and even a better story teller...well done worth the read"

"I love Jeannette’s writing. This book was very well written and I loved the way she paints the world you are reading. I recommend to read, The Glass Castle, first before reading, Half Broke Horses."

"I enjoyed that while this was *technically* a novel, it was rooted in truth. Jeannette Walls turned her considerable talent to her maternal grandmother, and it was brilliantly done. I felt the dry air and smelled the rain coming in, and I was as invested in Lilly’s life as I would be for someone I actually knew.

I like that Walls is branching out to more fictional stories (her newest this year, Hang the Moon, looks wonderful, though I haven’t read it yet), but this was nearly narrative nonfiction. Lily was a force of nature, and I enjoyed getting to know her through these pages."

"Excellent! Jeannette Walls has an amazing way with words. Although it's classified as "fiction" - called a "True Life Novel" - you can clearly see the true history of this wonderful amazing main protagonist woman. It's raw, honest, and inspiring."
