The definition of veterinary medicine can be restricted to the study of diseases of animals. However, the study of animals in health and disease, and the study of the causal agents of disease extends to a wide range of biological and medical sciences, including microbiology, pathology, physiology, pharmacology, biochemistry and also the feeding, housing and management of domestic animals. This wider definition has been adopted for the coverage of the thesaurus given its aim to serve as a common indexing and retrieval tool for existing services.
