"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger . . ." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922," the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness. In "Big Driver," a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face-to-face with another stranger: the one inside herself. "Fair Extension," the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Dave Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment. When her husband of more than twenty years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It’s a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends a good marriage. Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

""This was the Darker Life, where every truth was written backward."<br/><br/>Full Dark No Stars is a book of 4 novellas - 1922, Big Driver, Fair Extension, and A Good Marriage. I'll talk about each of them since there are only 4. This collection is pretty bleak, and the title is serious about the content - there are no light stories here. <br/><br/>The collection opens with 1922. I've always heard such good things about this story. I did like it overall, but it often reminded me of something I would have had to read in a school. It's well-written, and a pretty extensive character study; I think you just have to be in the right mood for it. <br/><br/>Next was Big Driver, which is a story about rape and revnlenge. It was heartbreaking. It's a really stressful read, and while it's worth reading once, it's probably not something I would ever read again. It hurt to read Big Driver, and it's one that will stick in the back of my head.<br/><br/>Fair Extension was after that. This was probably my least favorite of the 4 novellas. It's the shortest, and while it has an interesting set-up, I felt like it didn't really go anywhere. <br/><br/>My favorite was the last one - A Good Marriage. I wish that there would have been a story between this one and Fair Extension because they were both about a marriage and had some similarities in the beginning, but they wound up being quite different. I couldn't put this one down, and was completely hooked until the last page. <br/><br/>Overall, this was a good collection. I haven't read a ton of King's shorter works yet, and I was very happy with this one as a whole."

"This book consisted of 4 short stories that were particularly gruesome and a bit shocking. They were all about 'normal' people dealing with abnormal situations. It makes you wonder what you would do if put into one of these similar situations. All the stories were well written but I think the one I liked the most was the last story "A Good Marriage". I really tried to think what I would have done in that situation and I just don't know. It was a very unnerving story and gives you pause to think. I enjoyed this book and the readers did a great job of making the characters come to life. Another great Stephen King book."

"Some of it was definitely tough to read but I found it intriguing and it stuck with me. Wasn't a fan of Fair Extension and didn't love 1922, but thought Big Driver and A Good Marriage were stronger reads. On to the next one!"

"Full Dark, No Stars Review<br/>1922- I loved this book. No doubt in my mind that I wouldn't read it again in the future. Learned more than I would have thought. 5/5<br/>Big Driver- This one was the hardest to read. As a female you have to carefully watch your back in this world. The main character in this book had gotten raped and when it happened it was like a whole other person when she left. After that it took a TURN! Overall a strong 5/5!<br/>Fair Extension- This book showed me to be grateful for what I have because I don't know when it could be taken away. The main character makes a deal with the devil then it all goes downhill from there. Don't really have much to say about this book considering it was short but I saw it as a little realistic..? 4.5/5<br/>Lastly A good marriage- This one was also hard to read. Considering the lessons I learned this book made me a little weary because that one person you love and thought different of could be a whole other person and you wouldn't even expect it but it's a strong 5/5 !"
