Faith Hunter
In this series set in the same world as the Jane Yellowrock novels, New York Times bestselling author Faith Hunter introduces Nell Ingram, who wields powers as old as the earth. When Nell Ingram met skinwalker Jane Yellowrock, she was almost alone in the world, exiled by both choice and fear from the cult she was raised in, defending herself with the magic she drew from her deep connection to the forest that surrounds her. Now, Jane has referred Nell to PsyLED, a Homeland Security agency policing paranormals, and agent Rick LaFleur has shown up at Nell’s doorstep. His appearance forces her out of her isolated life into an investigation that leads to the vampire Blood Master of Nashville. Nell has a team—and a mission. But to find the Master’s kidnapped vassal, Nell and the PsyLED team will be forced to go deep into the heart of the very cult Nell fears, infiltrating the cult and a humans-only terrorist group before time runs out...

"There is something magical about the Jane Yellowrock/Soulwood series. I'm pretty sure that Khristine Hvam is an air witch and spells the story as she reads it. She does something amazing that I've only heard one other narrator do and I love that I have found her. She can do accents really well AND her male characters don't sound like a girl just doing a deep voice. It actually sounds like a cast of actors who are reading for the different voices. Pure enchantment. Jane and Nell do not have the same voice. They are both distinct and separate. For a narrator to not repeat a voice, I'm sold.

I wasn't sure if I would like this as much as Jane Yellowrock. It's the same world, but not the same kind of story. And let's face it, I hated Rick with body and soul. In this, it's a new side of him. One where we get to see what he's good at. He's good at being a cop and a leader. While his relationship with Paka is on rocky ground, I don't view him as a character I hate like I do when he's interacting with Jane.

Nell is so much different than Jane. It's nice to find a spin off series where the MC isn't just a rip off of another character that's already been written. Nell has a lot of baggage. She has had to overcome a lot when living solo and away from the church. She's had a lot of trouble and she has some revelations that changes everything for her. I found myself rooting for her, hoping she found her place where she didn't have to spent all her time being spied on and as an object to be controlled.

The only ding in this is that the audio had some funky stuff happen. The sound would randomly fade out in parts (after rewinding and listening on two devices, it's the audiobook, not my devices) and the background changed. It would be crisp and clear and then the weird hollow sound as she spoke."
