Vortex tells the story of Turk Findley, the protagonist introduced in Axis, who is transported ten thousand years into the future by the mysterious entities called "the Hypotheticals." In this future humanity exists on a chain of planets connected by Hypothetical gateways; but Earth itself is a dying world, effectively quarantined. Turk and his young friend Isaac Dvali are taken up by a community of fanatics who use them to enable a passage to the dying Earth, where they believe a prophecy of human/Hypothetical contact will be fulfilled. "Wow. Talk about in over my head. I really enjoyed the writing and storyline of this book, almost more than the others in the series. It lost a star from me because of the ending. Yes, everything gets wrapped up in a neat little bow, but I feel like the ending is lazy. It was explained instead of "shown." There are many better literary ways to wrap things up than to just lay it all out. I do understand that there wouldn't have been a great way to illustrate all the complexities that entailed the ending. My overall peeve is that each book in this series could have been expanded upon and had multiple books to go along with each storyline. Each book is thousands of years apart, and they don't flow as cohesively as they could. I would consider this less of a series and more of three books in the same "hypothetical" universe. Despite my misgivings, I did enjoy the series overall, and for the most part, the final book did the series justice."
