Ross Gay
'Punchy and compassionate' OBSERVERA collection of gorgeously written and timely pieces in which prize-winning poet and author Ross Gay considers the joy we incite when we care for each other, especially during life's inevitable hardships. In "We Kin" he thinks about the garden (especially around August, when the zucchini and tomatoes come on) as a laboratory of mutual aid; in "Share Your Bucket" he explores skate-boarding's reclamation of public space; he considers the costs of masculinity in "Grief Suite"; and in "Through My Tears I Saw," he recognizes what was healed in caring for his father as he was dying. In an era when divisive voices take up so much air space, Inciting Joy offers a vital alternative: what might be possible if we turn our attention to what brings us together? Full of energy, curiosity, and compassion, it is essential reading from one of our most brilliant writers.

"Ross Gay is a necessary voice for us all, I think. I went to his reading in my town last week and he tried to claim that he “just describes things.” Yes, at its least descriptive that’s true, but I think what he does is illuminate. Having read The Book of Delights previously, this felt like a clarifying book, dispelling anyone who tried to say his writing was optimistic and hopeful (which it can be sometimes). This one very intimately explored the interconnection between sorrow and joy, and it’s full of feels for the reader to move through. He writes like so many of us speak and tell stories: tangents, asides, excited utterances, it feels like you’re with your long time friend or family member. While at the reading, he shared that someone in the mycology field came out of his book feeling that all of the moments and experiences shared in the book (and that we all share) are like a mycorrizal network and and that the delights are the mushrooms, the fruit, of that network. How beautiful."
