Cherokee

The largest Native nation in North America today, the Cherokees live throughout the United States. Their homelands once spread across the southeastern United States, and one reservation remains in North Carolina. However, thousands were forced from their homes and farmland during Georgia's takeover of their land. The U.S. Army marched many Cherokees, barefoot and starving, over 800 miles to Indian Territory. Many died on this Trail of Tears. Their descendants live on in northeastern Oklahoma. The Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma has become a leader among Native Americans, managing tribal programs, including educational, housing, and other social services.
