"A standout book. Brilliant and scary in its current relevance. I was relieved by the theme of resilience in this book. Society may have been in a state of decay, but the main character maintained a hopeful and intelligent resilience that I think can be translated well to anyone who doesn't want to fall into fear and despair. There were a lot of good takeaways from this book. There were so many noteworthy passages that I sat with and thought about. I will definitely read this again. "

"Incredibly uncanny or pure prediction? Butler's novel, published in 1993, includes fires in the Altadena, CA area in a dystopian 2025, complete with an ogliarch in power who promotes the slogan "Make America Great Again".
Butler's tale shows present day Americans how good we still have it, and how much we still have left to fight for.
On top of all of this, the protagonist, the young daughter of a minister, forges her own path, both spiritual and literal, as she is forced to leave home and brave whatever dangers and opportunities present themselves on her journey out of L.A. and up north.
A must read. "

"It pains me to say this but I really did not like this book. I struggled reading and finishing this. I had to put it down on page 164. I liked the science fiction components but the religious stuff was a lot for me personally. However it was beautifully written and a great wake up call. "
