"Again amazing world building. Honestly to the point were I can't begin to comprehend the scope of this authors research and constructing. Still Jemisin keeps many important happenings from the reader but not enough to hamper their progress. A difficult balancing act to be sure. Sadly though the first book was so amazing the next two will not top it. And The Obelisk Gate had a bit of the second book syndrome.

For instance the pace was slower and the story became more of a filler. The map was a mystery seeing as how most of the names where not on it. That being said Jemisin is anything but a cookie cutter writer. Honestly I have read too many book this year. (I know blasphemy right?) To the point where many stories start to merge together in there similarities. Then you come across Jemisin and she blows your preconceived notion out of the water.

This story, is in fact, complicated. If thats not for you than you're missing out. Working for something may be difficult but much more rewarding in the end. She has made the history of the people deep and the world more full by comparison. Nothing will be given to you. It has to be earned.

There are also many symbolism in which I'm sad to say I had to dig deep for because many things go over my head. But I know that they are there. The author makes you feel everything even if you can't understand it just yet. Again I will give nothing of the story away. I worked hard to get to know these charaters you will have to do the same."

"This second part of a trilogy follows the rules that most second parts of trilogies follow: it doesn't really have a beginning or end, as it bridges the true beginning (Book 1) and the true end (Book 3) of this story. That being said, like the best of middle chapters, it does provide a semblance of beginning and end, told in a complete and satisfying story. It can't use the main narrative trick of the first book, but instead finds a new trick, one that, while perhaps not quite as effective, doesn't need to be, as I was already completely drawn into the story and characters. My one complaint would likely be that the series is very dark and seems to be headed toward a very dark conclusion in the final book, but I am hopeful that the conclusion will be satisfying nonetheless."
