I really want to rate this 4 stars but I would rate it 3.5 stars.

It hurts my heart to rate it so low because I was so looking forward to this book because I have been craving a fantasy book all about necromancy. Don't get me wrong there are really cool parts in this book, actually, there are five parts specifically that I really liked but that was about it. To keep it simple and to keep me from rambling I will list what I did and didn't like.

Cool Things
* There are things that are called Heartglasses that basically take a visual form of one's heart. And they have power to them to the color tells you a lot about the person and if you lose your heartglass you can be rendered powerless.
* The Magic system relied on the use of runes and the color of one's heartglass.
* I love that the witches, the asha, are like geishas who are trained in magic, history, dance, music, and general ways of feminity.

Things that I didn't like
* The characters had the personality of paper dolls.
* A good chunk of the book was just boring for it went on and on about her training as an asha. Which is a good thing in the sense I want to know what brought the main character up to that point but after a while, it just felt that I was just reading the same thing.
* The action parts just felt like hills in a straight road start___/\___/\______/\___/\___/\__end
* The ending just felt confusing for when Tea was in the daeva's head I wasn't exactly sure I was following how she got there and what exactly was happening. I also felt that the reveal of the Faceless maid was kind of just thrown in there. Also why and when did she get with Kalen? The had about as much chemistry as bleach and ammonia.

Now I feel awful because this book has so much potential and according to the reviews for the next book it is an upgrade from the first. So I probably will read it eventually. Rin Chupeco fantastic at creating a description and world building and given that usually, the first book of a series is usually where the author is still working out the kinks I will give this series another shot.
