"I love this rich and colorful historical novel. A varied group of men and women join forces with “alienist” Dr Kreisler to stop the brutal killings of young boys in tenements and pleasure houses of 1890s NYC. Author Caleb Carr, who died of cancer in May 2024, described this book as a “whydunnit.” The new worlds of psychology, medical science and forensics combine to imagine, predict and ultimately halt the murders as the team zeroes in on a brutally broken man whose early abuses ultimately shaped the killer he became. Carr vividly recreates 1890s New York City — life centers on lower Manhattan, horse carriages and trams are the primary vehicles, the Croton Reservoir appears in the prime NYC location now occupied by NY Public Library and Delmonico’s at the bottom of Manhattan is the premier restaurant. Excellent story, detailed research, well-drawn characters. Second reading since I devoured the hard cover in 1994. Book club read."
"Very good- occasionally confusing and the ending felt slightly disappointing (rushed) but very good. "
