Reese's Book Club Summer YA Pick '24"YA is a feeling. It's a warm summer day reading in the sun, lots of nostalgia, gushing together over the characters in Twelfth Knight."—Reese WitherspoonFrom the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six (under the pen name Olivie Blake) comes Twelfth Knight, a YA romantic comedy and coming-of-age story about taking up space in the world and learning what it means to let others in.*This luxe hardcover edition will include endpaper art by Little Chmura, a foil case stamp, and designed printed edges.*Viola Reyes is annoyed. Her painstakingly crafted tabletop game campaign was shot down, her best friend is suggesting she try being more “likable,” and her school's star running back Jack Orsino is the most lackadaisical Student Body President she’s ever seen, which makes her job as VP that much harder. Vi’s favorite escape from the world is the MMORPG Twelfth Knight, but online spaces aren’t exactly kind to girls like her—girls who are extremely competent and have the swagger to prove it. So Vi creates a masculine alter ego, choosing to play as a knight named Cesario to create a safe haven for herself. But when a football injury leads Jack Orsino to the world of Twelfth Knight, Vi is alarmed to discover their online alter egos—Cesario and Duke Orsino—are surprisingly well-matched.As the long nights of game-play turn into discussions about life and love, Vi and Jack soon realize they’ve become more than just weapon-wielding characters in an online game. .𖥔 ˖ “You, are the bane of my existence, Jack Orsino.” “As you are mine.”
This is a retelling of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Funnily enough, both Olivie Blake books I’ve read have been Shakespeare retellings and really beautiful. I guess I should be checking out more of her stuff. Tropes in this include; black cat girl x golden retriever boy, enemies to lovers, I hate everyone but you, secret identity, TRUE love triangle.
Viola could be described as a shrew and many people tell her so because she definitely has a lot of feminine rage. However, her anger was totally called for even if she could be rude about it, they usually asked for it and I’m glad she never changed that aspect to her but was able to open up and lower her defenses for some people. She’s very skilled and a badass which honestly just makes me admire her and I’m jealous that I’m not as cool as her. “do we need a plan? I have interests and hobbies and passions. Isn’t that enough?” FELT and also inspired.
I really like the pacing of it. ery diverse cast of characters that I loved, especially her brother Bash. I was excited to pick up the book each time and had a hard time putting it down. The fictional tv show in this was very intriguing and I’m jealous that I can’t be apart of the fandom.
As for the romance, the banter made me giggle and I was evilly cackling everytime they had to spend time together. They really were so cute. I love that neither of them really had to change themselves. Jack was just discovering more of who he was and what he liked, and she was helping him while being more herself too. She encourages him to make decisions for himself that aren’t based on one possible life track. And they bonded over things they both liked. I think that’s a really lasting relationship."
"Description: Definitely a cute enemies to lovers romance starts off with the two main characters V a geeky nerd who loves fantasy video games, books, shows and etc and Jack who is a football player who was the best on his team until an incident occurs. My opinion: I liked it butttttt it’s not my top favs I really was expecting something more out of this book.
"
"Plot was eh. The protagonist was a little annoying at times. Romance just kinda appeared out of nowhere. Too much cussing for my liking (doesn’t dictate the rating tho). But the thing I liked most was that it was centered around a girl playing video games (which I also can relate to… since I am a girl who plays video games lol) and you don’t see that a lot. "

"Jack Orsino is his highs school best running back on the football field. This was to be his best year yet until an ACL injury side lines him. To pass the time, his friend Nick suggest he start learning to play an online role playing game called Twelfth Knight. Jack struggles for a time on his own until he teams up with a fellow Knight by the name of Cesario. He is very good at the game and they become friends. What he doesn't know is that Cesario is really his arch nemesis and vice president of the school student body Vi Reyes is actually Cesario. Viola Reyes knows that Jack is DukeOrsino but Jack thinks she is Bash, her twin brother. Unfortunately, for Vi, things start to spin out of control. On top of lieing to her Jack online, not speaking with her best friend Antonia and having a deal with Jack to find out why Olivia, his girlfriend, really wants to take a break from their relationship. Will Vi finally tell the ones she loves and cares about the truth and stop pretending to be something she is not? Vi is an awesome character but she has major trust issues. I am glad to see that her character was well rounded and very entertaining. Jack, I assumed, would be a stupid jock but I was wrong. He was a very sweet and dedicated character and I really enjoyed his story arch as well. Antonia, Bash, and Olivia were also really entertaining side characters. The story had a fun story with a satisfying ending. Highly reccomend to fans of Ren Faires, cons, online role playing games or Dungeons and Dragons!"
