Kwame Mbalia
Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Kwame Mbalia's epic fantasy, a middle grade American Gods set in a richly-imagined world populated with African American folk heroes and West African gods. *"Mbalia expertly weaves a meaningful portrayal of family and community with folklore, myth, and history--including the legacy of the slave trade--creating a fast-paced, heroic series starter."--Publishers Weekly (starred review)Seventh grader Tristan Strong feels anything but strong ever since he failed to save his best friend when they were in a bus accident together. All he has left of Eddie is the journal his friend wrote stories in. Tristan is dreading the month he's going to spend on his grandparents' farm in Alabama, where he's being sent to heal from the tragedy. But on his first night there, a sticky creature shows up in his bedroom and steals Eddie's notebook. Tristan chases after it--is that a doll?--and a tug-of-war ensues between them underneath a Bottle Tree. In a last attempt to wrestle the journal out of the creature's hands, Tristan punches the tree, accidentally ripping open a chasm into the MidPass, a volatile place with a burning sea, haunted bone ships, and iron monsters that are hunting the inhabitants of this world. Tristan finds himself in the middle of a battle that has left Black American folk heroes John Henry and Brer Rabbit exhausted. In order to get back home, Tristan and these new allies will need to entice the god Anansi, the Weaver, to come out of hiding and seal the hole in the sky. But bartering with the trickster Anansi always comes at a price. Can Tristan save this world before he loses more of the things he loves? Winner of a Coretta Scott King Author Honor Endorsed by Rick Riordan, author of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, soon to be a series on Disney+.

"The concept is great: your basic ordinary-kid-gets-sucked-into-a-magical-world-and must-save-it, but instead of a fantasy land based on Greek myth or British folklore, this world is based on African and African American folktales, with legendary characters Brer Fox, Brer Rabbit, John Henry, Anansi and Gum Baby. The evil creatures are none-too subtle evocations of slavery: live chains called "fetterlings" which drag people away to monstrous ships reeking of death. The magic talismans: journals and Story Boxes save the people by preserving their stories.

So yes, great concept, middling execution. Tristan is an accessible and overall empathetic character; weighed down by familial expectations he fears he can't live up to, tortured with guilt over his best friend's death, and not at all convinced he is the hero that's needed. But the world-building and plotting need work; it's unclear what exactly is happening or what the goal is, and there is a lot of aimless jetting about from one locale to the next. Except for the delightfully hilarious Gum Baby, the other characters don't pop, and the novel suffers from "strong feisty girl" syndrome: 2 supporting female characters who are brave, strong, and smart, but totally devoid of personality or backstory. Overall, the dialogue is not consistent to character, or appropriate to the situation. I found myself having to push to keep reading at several points.

But I'm not the target audience. Would a 7th grader, especially an African American 7th grader like it? I'm not sure there is enough plot and suspense to keep a kid engaged, and while the folklore and historical references might please parents and grandparents, they won't necessarily excite your average 12 year old."
"This book was EVERYTHING!!! It was so good and I will be thinking about it for a while yet. I loved the characters and the plot. The journey to Tristan accepting his role in the story and his healing process over Eddie's death is absolutely breathtaking. The book is filled with humor that will make you laugh out loud and such touching moments that will steal your heart. I love Tristan's character development and his band of characters that he collects along the way. I will be anxiously awaiting the sequel this October and in the meantime plan to force everyone to read it."
