As I picked this book up and read the blurb, I thought this probably wasn't good timing for this book. Last Wednesday was the day I had surgery, and the afternoon before I had to put my sweet dog, Honey, to sleep. After my daughter's graduation, she went downhill very quickly. Suddenly, she couldn't walk more than three steps without collapsing. Even though I've known it was coming, it didn't make the actual day any easier. Add that to the post op meds and exhaustion, and I wasn't sure I wanted to read a book about heartbreak, especially one that might involve a dog.

But I actually really enjoyed this book. Yes, tears were shed, but they were the cleansing kind. Virginia was a romantic, but a realist at the same time. The supporting characters were sympathetic and realistic, especially for me, as I grew up in a small town similar to this book.

Two good people, separated by tragedy that come back together. This wasn't a love story, it was a family story.

If you have liked Catherine Ryan Hyde's previous books, like Pay It Forward (the CRH book everyone knows) or Don't Let Me Go (my favorite CRH book), you will like this. It's the perfect quiet read for summer.

Current Goodreads Rating 4.17"
