Karen Kingsbury
Bestselling author Karen Kingsbury reminds us that before you take a stand, you’ve got to take a chance.Despite his quiet ways and quirky behaviors, Holden Harris is very happy and socially engaged—on the inside, in a private world all his own. But Holden is an eighteen-year-old with autism. Every day he is bullied at school by kids who only see that he is very different.Ella Reynolds is part of the in-crowd. A cheerleader and star of the high school drama production, her life seems perfect. When she catches Holden listening to her rehearse for the school play, she is drawn to him . . . the way he is drawn to the music. Then Ella makes a dramatic discovery—she and Holden were best friends as children. Frustrated by the way Holden is bullied and horrified at the indifference of her peers, Ella decides to take a stand against the most privileged and popular kids at school. Including her boyfriend, Jake.Ella believes miracles can happen in the most unlikely places and that just maybe an entire community might celebrate from the sidelines. But will Holden’s praying mother, Ella, and a cast of theater kids be enough to unlock the prison that contains Holden? This time friendship, faith, and the power of a song must be strong enough to open the doors to the miracle Holden needs. This contemporary, inspirational read is a standalone novel. Book length: approximately 80,000 words. Includes a reading group guide and a letter to readers from the author.

"This is one Karen Kingsbury book that hit it out of the park for me. The portrayal of #autism was fairly done, and I appreciated that the autism wasn't "cured" at the end, because obviously autism doesn't work like that! However, there was a feeling of #romance and, even more than romance, #friendship. I'll even admit it, this book made me majorly cry near the end--but that's a good thing, I swear! #coming_of_age #lovethisbook"
"This review is a bit a little late because I didn't feel like writing it after I finished the book. I only ready the novella part of this book again, since I wanted to read Stellarlune as quickly as possible (I actually started it and its so good so far). Anyways, the novella in this book (Unlocked) was so amazing! I'm kinda sad that their wasn't more of it because I absolutely loved having Keefe's POV and Sophie's POV . It was just a really cool idea. And I know that other authors write from multiple POVs. But it was so different for this series and I loved that. It was also really well written. And since this review is starting to get longer than I anticipated, I'm going to end it, but not without the wonderful quotes by Keefe:<br/><br/>"A beautiful voice.<br/>Keefe's favorite voice--even when it was all squeaky with worry." (This is from Keefe's POV. I literally love how in love he is with Sophie, and I'm glad we got to see that by getting to see what his thoughts are like)<br/><br/>"She really was the cutest worrier ever." (This is also from Keefe's POV. It one of his thoughts just like the quote above)<br/><br/>"You're cute when you try to be optimistic, Foster." (I seriously love whenever he calls her Foster. Also they are having a telepathic conversation or whatever its called where Sophie reaches out and connects their thoughts. I'm honestly forgetting how it works)<br/><br/>Keefe left Sophie this letter before he ran away. This isn't all of it because I wasn't typing all of that out, so I included the bit I like most. This seriously made me cry:<br/>"And since this is the last time I'll ever talk to you, I just... I want to say that I'm really going to miss you. You mean a lot to me, Foster. More than you'll ever know.<br/><br/>Please be careful. Please be happy. And PLEASE forget all about me.<br/><br/>It'll be better for everyone that way. You'll see.<br/><br/>Love,<br/>Keefe"<br/><br/>I panicked in the middle of writing this because I accidentally turned off my laptop, and I though I was going to lose all my progress on the review. Luckily I didn't. :)"
"This book was amazing!!!!! I loved all the full color illustrations that were included in the book! The artists were so talented! This is totally a main part of the series and a book you can't skip! I am team SoFitz all the way and this book gave me so much hope that they will get back together!!!! I can't wait till book 9 come out! Shannon Messenger is such a talented and amazing author! I can't wait till November!!!"
"I think the guide part of the book was unnecessary and kind of boring for me. I don’t need to know what all the flowers are or learn about a random creature I’ll never need to know. The pictures were awesome and keefe’s journal thing was awesome but I honestly don’t care about the rest. It was either something I already know or something I don’t need to know and I’m honestly kind of tired of it. Every single book there’s always long paragraphs dedicated to summarizing something we already know. It’s boring. I don’t need a recap on Sophie’s backstory every time it comes up. I already know all of that. I give the guide portion of the book 2 stars and keefes journal and the pictures 5 stars. <br/>The actual book part of the book was pretty decent. I LOVED LOVED LOVED keefes point of view and I loved how sophie was actually having an attitude/personality in this book. I am so sad that keefe was so scared of himself but I also loved the twist it put on the books. I’m glad dex got more book time and I’m sad we got no linh, no Wylie, only a little biana, only a little tam. Etc. honestly there’s more to the book than just sophie. But other than that I’d give the book part of the book 4.5 stars. <br/>But I’m also worried. The plot hasn’t really gone anywhere. I mean things have happened but nothing that furthers the plot or the black swans ability to actually win this fight. Hopefully there’s actually build up to winning instead of it just magically happening. <br/>Oh well I’ll let Shannon worry about that. <br/>I love this series and I’m excited to find out what happens next!"
