Francis Fukuyama
Nations are not trapped by their pasts, but events that happened hundreds or even thousands of years ago continue to exert huge influence on present-day politics. If we are to understand the politics that we now take for granted, we need to understand its origins. Francis Fukuyama examines the paths that different societies have taken to reach their current forms of political order. This book starts with the very beginning of mankind and comes right up to the eve of the French and American revolutions, spanning such diverse disciplines as economics, anthropology and geography. The Origins of Political Order is a magisterial study on the emergence of mankind as a political animal, by one of the most eminent political thinkers writing today.

"This two part series is one of my favorite political books and I got so much out of its reading.
My one criticism is that when he gets to"scientific governance" the example he uses has no built in feedback loop. IF you don't record abd review results and act on them that's not an example of scientific effort, even if it was branded that way.
The author has also since this book came out reconsidered good stance on socialism, while he holds many of his same concerns that are listed in the book he is absolutely willing to examine the policies and benefits.
For those who read that last sentence and think this is not for you I will say two things. This book does not hold that stance, and that dismissing something you've been told to dismiss while never examining it's arguments as put together by its actual advocates is nota good example of thinking critically about a stance. It's fine to disagree. Learn to formulate your own arguments on why."
