"I love Carly Simon. And I liked this book. I wish there were some more elusive number between 4 and 5… not a decimal, but something else entirely. Where do you place something, over and done, when you want to continue the conversation? You see, from Boys In The Trees, the song, I felt we became close friends, like there was a soft flame in our inner worlds that flickered the same, nearly going out in its own blooming strength. Now Carly was entirely upfront about her experiences, and I respect the hell out of that… but I don’t think we really saw where the music comes from. I mean a person’s essence is private, but it doesn’t make someone on the outside yearn for it any less. Who is she - beyond her experiences?

When she shared the vulnerability of continuing to love someone after it’s over, after they don’t love you any more — the thrill of absolute recognition shot through me. Most people wouldn’t want to cop to that."
