"A perfect military fantasy: brutal, complex, human and impossible to put down." - Tasha Suri, author of Empire of SandIn an epic fantasy unlike any other, two women clash in a world full of rebellion, espionage, and military might on the far outreaches of a crumbling desert empire. Touraine is a soldier. Stolen as a child and raised to kill and die for the empire, her only loyalty is to her fellow conscripts. But now, her company has been sent back to her homeland to stop a rebellion, and the ties of blood may be stronger than she thought. Luca needs a turncoat. Someone desperate enough to tiptoe the bayonet's edge between treason and orders. Someone who can sway the rebels toward peace, while Luca focuses on what really matters: getting her uncle off her throne. Through assassinations and massacres, in bedrooms and war rooms, Touraine and Luca will haggle over the price of a nation. But some things aren't for sale.

"Wow I thought this book was going to be a 5 star without doubt, but I just found it so terribly boring. I listened to it on audiobook and while I thought the narrator did a great job, maybe that was part of the reason? I’m really not sure why I found it so boring. Maybe it was just my mood these past few weeks?

Because normally I’m really into political intrigue—which is basically 100% of what this book is. I thought anyway!! Maybe I just need more than political intrigue to care about it. All the conversations about colonialism and the nuance of the characters was really well done so I just do not know why this didn’t hit for me, but unfortunately I had to force myself to finish"
"The writing style is rlly nice and I love the concept and world building but I just couldn’t finish it because I thought the relationship between the two main characters was out of pocket and almost insensitive??? Like I felt guilty when they were dancing and kissing because people were literally dying?? Ntm the way Touraine screws over her lovely girlfriend to mess with the princess and be her bodyguard. I’m sure there’s a lot of symbolism there and maybe it just went over my head. I appreciate the story and what it’s trying to say, but it felt like I was playing trope roulette. I feel like this book was made for TikTok audiences who love romance with a side of historical high fantasy. "
