"While this was a worthwhile read, I’m afraid I wasn’t as wowed as I expected to be. It’s difficult to feel much empathy for two such self absorbed characters, and Florentino’s wasted years of waiting feels pathetic rather than tragic. However, the later portions achieve a luminous poignancy as the characters age and reflect on the inevitability of death. The ending is truly beautiful, but does not quite make up for the tedium of the rest."
"Bad book! Too many characters that so cared nothing about! The suicide in the beginning of the book isn't even a character really. The sexually exploits of the main character are gross, especially when he is an old man at the end and he is having sex with his ward!"
