Recently widowed and rendered penniless by her Ponzi-scheming husband, Julia Bishop is eager to start anew. So when a stranger appears on her doorstep with a job offer, she finds herself accepting the mysterious yet unique position: caretaker to his mother, Amaris Sinclair, the famous and rather eccentric horror novelist whom Julia has always admired . . . and who the world believes is dead. When she arrives at the Sinclairs' enormous estate on Lake Superior, Julia begins to suspect that there may be sinister undercurrents to her "too-good-to-be-true" position. As Julia delves into the reasons of why Amaris chose to abandon her successful writing career and withdraw from the public eye, her search leads to unsettling connections to her own family tree, making her wonder why she really was invited to Havenwood in the first place, and what monstrous secrets are still held prisoner within its walls.

"Original review 10/22/2019
The setting was beautiful and made me nostalgic for Midwestern Winters (crazy, right? Especially since I still *live* in the Midwest and Winter Is Coming in like a month. Probably sooner), the ghost story was handled with juuust the right level of creepiness, and though the writing of the side romance was still a little eh -hand wobble-, it was still a lot more natural and less forced than the one in The Fate Of Mercy Alban. Definitely an excellent read for this time of the year and probably likely to get a reread from me in future Ocrobers."
"Kept me interested the whole way! The ending felt rushed, though. The epilogue is up for interpretation by the reader, which I both love and hate."

"I really did enjoy this book. Sure it was complex or anything as some of you are reviewing think it shouldve been, but it was a fun and enjoyable read for me. Some parts i couldnt put it down and i felt so jealous of the love story. I would recommend this novel to read as a getaway for a couple of days. I liked her descriptiveness that helped me imagine everything as i went through reading."

"Rarely have I read a book so redundant. There must have been five separate scenes with Julia wrestling with "you must tell me the story... But now everyone looks upset... I'm scared... Please don't tell me the story". Alright, we get it - you're torn, but enough is enough. Over and over again it almost appears as though it will be revealed that Julia is actually Seraphina and Drew is actually Andrew but that's not the case. The writing is muddled and the protagonist seems weak-willed and unable to make a decision for herself."
