Jessie Mihalik
The critically acclaimed author of Polaris Rising takes readers on an exciting journey with the start of her brand-new series about a female bounty hunter and the man who is her sworn enemy. "Jessie Mihalik is an author to watch." -- Ilona Andrews, #1 New York Times bestselling author Octavia Zarola would do anything to keep her tiny, close-knit bounty hunting crew together--even if it means accepting a job from Torran Fletcher, a ruthless former general and her sworn enemy. When Torran offers her enough credits to not only keep her crew afloat but also hire someone to fix her ship, Tavi knows that she can't refuse--no matter how much she'd like to. With so much money on the line, Torran and his crew insist on joining the hunt. Tavi reluctantly agrees because while the handsome, stoic leader pushes all of her buttons--for both anger and desire--she's endured worse, and the massive bonus payment he's promised for a completed job is reason enough to shut up and deal. But when they uncover a deeper plot that threatens the delicate peace between humans and Valoffs, Tavi suspects that Torran has been using her as the impetus for a new war. With the fate of her crew balanced on a knife's edge, Tavi must decide where her loyalties lie--with the quiet Valoff who's been lying to her, or with the human leaders who left her squad to die on the battlefield. And this time, she's put her heart on the line.

"Loved it. Mature and complicated characters who challenge each other and themselves throughout. Great side story about prejudice and the scars left after war. Stand alone, but I know there will be more. I'd love to see what happens with these two crazy kids, but I'm satisfied without additional story."
"I DEVOURED this story. The angst, the characters, the action, twists and turns, the absolute despair. I was here for ALL OF IT! Jesse Mihalik created a world full of absolutely girl badassery, complemented but not overshadowed by sexy supporting boy soldiers/generals. Captain Tavi is a bounty hunter just trying to get by, her only goals are keeping her crew safe and fed. In walks sexy insufferable General Fletcher, who comes to her with an offer too good to be true. Help find a treasured thing back home, half of the compensation up front, the other half at the end regardless of whether the thing is found or not. Easy peezy right? Did we mention “back home” is Valovia, enemy territory where Captain Tavi has a bounty on her own head, where her and her crew fought for a decade the likes of very client she is considering? Oh also General Fletcher and his crew, they’ll be accompanying them in HER ship during the entirety of the hunt. Do you see where I’m going? Close quarters, cohabitation is going to make what is supposed to be easy peezy in to hard and impossible. This we go down this journey to Valovia where scars are shown, and people become vulnerable, and FAMILY IS FOUND amongst the unlikeliest of humans/Valovians! Alliances are broken, reforged, and thrown out the window! I absolutely loved this and without giving spoilers away this review seems insane. But trust me, I came for the scifi, I stayed for the angst and the spice and the fight scenes! Happy reading! "
"OH MY GOD. I don't even know how to be NORMAL about this book. This was amazing. Basically everything I've ever wanted in a romance. I am shook.
Things I loved that I hope to coherently elaborate upon in the future:
- The sparring as foreplay
- The found family
- The two leaders falling for each other
- The making meals for each other
- The ENDEARMENTS in other languages
- The makeouts are so hot wtf
- The entire parking garage scene 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
- THE ******* BETRAYAL
- THE LIFE DEBT
- THE POOL SCENE
- AND THEN THE SHOWER SCENE
- EVERY MOMENT OF TENSION I COULD EVER DEVOUR
If I had to critique, I would've preferred just a bit more explicit for the actual spice scene. This is open door, but not explicit. Even still, it was one of the hottest books I have read. The tension was delicious.
God I can't wait to start the next book. But also, I feel like I need to think about this alone for like, the next two days at least. My god."
"2.8-3 stars<br/>I know I won’t be reading the next book. I was wondering what it was about this book that I didn’t like and why I didn’t really care about the relationships, when I realized Torran and Tavi didn’t really have any personality. They were pretty blah and the romance between them was also blah. I found the other characters to be equally underwhelming, and I was kind of forcing myself to finish. I gave it three stars because I think the book started out good and kind of just dulled out from there"
