"Not only is this a fun way to learn some of the basics of Mandarin, but this book actually teaches you how to study effectively! It doesn't discuss the pedagogy much, but it definitely uses spaced repetition and contextual learning. The characters are not really taught in this book, but they ARE included, so learners new to Chinese characters may begin to recognize them through some passive exposure. The author's attempts at humor can fall flat or could even be a bit demeaning or off-putting at times, but a small quibble with such an entertaining and useful little language book. The other books in the Unlocking series teach beginning French, Spanish, and German."
