This bestselling and award-winning novel about a teenage girl in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam speaks powerfully to the realities of grief, heartbreak, and bravery, perfect for fans of Kristin Hannah and Ruta Sepetys. Amsterdam, 1943. Hanneke spends her days procuring and delivering black market goods to paying customers, her nights hiding the true nature of her work from her concerned parents, and every waking moment mourning her boyfriend, who was killed on the Dutch front lines when the Germans invaded. She likes to think of her illegal work as a small act of rebellion. On a routine delivery, a client asks Hanneke for help. Expecting to hear that Mrs. Janssen wants meat or kerosene, Hanneke is shocked by the older woman's frantic plea to find a person—a Jewish teenager Mrs. Janssen had been hiding, who has vanished without a trace from a secret room. Hanneke initially wants nothing to do with such dangerous work, but is ultimately drawn into a web of mysteries and stunning revelations that lead her into the heart of the resistance, open her eyes to the horrors of the Nazi war machine, and compel her to take desperate action. Beautifully written, intricately plotted, and meticulously researched, Girl in the Blue Coat is an extraordinary novel about courage, grief, and love in impossible times.

"I read Night by Elie Wiesel in high school and his book captivated me and it's a book I still carry with me today. I just started reading more this year and I wasn't sure about what book genre I'm in to now as an adult. So kept wanting to read something similar to Night but didn't know which book To read next. The Girl in the Blue Coat found me as I started to frequent Little Free Libraries in my area. I am so happy that this book found me, this is another book I will continue to carry with me in my life. It was beautifully written, the details, the history it was just an amazing heartfelt story. I will definitely be looking for more books by Monica Hesse, as this book is definitely top on my list of favorite books."
"A compelling mystery that takes place during WW2. This book makes you think about what life could’ve been like back then."

"3.5 stars

Let me start by saying despite my rating this book is really good and if you like history fiction/mysteries then you will enjoy this book.

I loved the fact that the author did a lot of research while writing the book. If she was writing a certain scene she would look through at least 50 books to get the one information that she needed. If the character was eating some thing the author would try it so that she knew how to describe it. Even with the small detailed she did so much research. There are a few things that the author made up but most of the stuff in the book are real. Because of that the book feels like Amsterdam during WWII. (The author visited Amsterdam before she wrote the book)

The book it set during the second World War. It was interesting that it was set outside the War and in the area controlled by the Nazi.

I liked the characters but i didn’t get that attached to them. They did feel real. It was just that nothing about them really impressed me.

The ending was good but was kinda confusing until you got the full story."
"I disliked it because it used the holocaust as a background. The story could’ve taken place in anytime point and it would’ve worked. As a Jewish person, it was extremely difficult not to throw the book across the floor. The writing style was lovely, but should not be labeled as a holocaust book. Should be labeled as a mystery book. Poorly researched book. "
"When you are part of systemic injustice - evil, even - what choices do you have? Either you are a victim or a perpetrator; there is no third option. Monica Hesse clearly shows that doing nothing is, itself, an act that allows evil to flourish. This, her first YA novel, is one that affected me personally (my family was murdered by Nazis during the Holocaust); it is also one of my all-time favorite books."
"Too slow, felt like it dragged on. By the time I got to the plot twist, I just wasn't into it anymore"

"Not a very big book reader but this is one book I loved and I finished it with in a week which says something about me. If I’m not really into reading it takes me a good bit to read it but this book just made me want to keep reading until the end "
