From the author of You Must Not Miss comes a haunting contemporary horror novel that explores themes of mental illness, rage, and grief, twisted with spine-chilling elements of Agatha Christie and Stephen King. Following her father's death, Jane North-Robinson and her mom move from sunny California to the dreary, dilapidated old house in Maine where her mother grew up. All they want is a fresh start, but behind North Manor's doors lurks a history that leaves them feeling more alone ... and more tormented. As the cold New England autumn arrives, and Jane settles in to her new home, she finds solace in old books and memories of her dad. She steadily begins making new friends, but also faces bullying from the resident "bad seed," struggling to tamp down her own worst nature in response. Jane's mom also seems to be spiraling with the return of her childhood home, but she won't reveal why. Then Jane discovers that the "storage room" her mom has kept locked isn't for storage at all--it's a little girl's bedroom, left untouched for years and not quite as empty of inhabitants as it appears... Is it grief? Mental illness? Or something more ... horrid?

"This book really shows the depths of human emotion. Grief can corrupt us, it can change us, just as anger can. Sometimes, we lose control of our emotions, and this book simply shows the slow burn of anger that can well up inside us, the darkness waiting to show itself in the light. I was utterly terrified reading this, unsure of what Jane’s anger would cause, despite being fictional. This serves as a horrifying reminder as to where our emotions can take us. This book was truly, truly horrid. "
"3.75 star<br/> <br/>This story had everything fall you could hope for. Old book store, warm lattes, cold snaps, Halloween, mystery novels, and even a spooky house set in Maine. The authors writing was perfectly atmospheric and very well detailed, even the smells. <br/><br/>Really I have been trying to stay away from young adult books because of, well you know they center more around romance or explain things until your ears bleed. Surprisingly though this novel was very well structured and absolutely no romance to be had. Well maybe a little twinkle in the eye.<br/><br/>I do think that the Agatha Christie book references were mentioned way to often. Practically every other page. Also you have to be a little sparse when you mention Alice in Wonderland because it seems to be a recurring theme with a lot of writers and honestly the Author didn't over do it in this.<br/><br/>Jane was amazingly relatable almost scarily so. The obsessive compulsive disorder and the anger was interesting. Also it seemed to spark echos of my own wrath within. I can't speak for everyone but my mind does seem to wonder down dark paths at times. It scares me to think I could be alone in this.<br/><br/>The open ending was perfect to me and made my eyes go wide. It always peaks my interest when you are left to daydream about what could be. To me it felt like the book references became to much of a filler. The story would have been perfect if it they were replaced with other things. History, thoughts, or actions. Though I read this near Halloween and it was a great chilling easy read for this time of year.<br/><br/>"Like walking through a familiar room in the dark and missing your step, knocking your hip into the chair you could have sworn was three away from you. <br/><br/>Like raising your hand to wave at someone in a crowd before realising it isn't who thought it was at all.""
"⭐️⭐️⭐️ Meh. It was alright. It had a fantastic atmosphere and I feel like started off strong, but the plot moved at a snail’s pace and overall just not much happened. If you’re looking for something somewhat predictable and lackluster then this is the book for you. 3 stars though because, the atmosphere and setting was peak Halloween vibes. "
