Louise Penny
Read the series that inspired Three Pines on Prime Video. In Still Life, bestselling author Louise Penny introduces Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec. Winner of the New Blood Dagger, Arthur Ellis, Barry, Anthony, and Dilys awards. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Surêté du Québec and his team of investigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it's a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bowhunter. Still Life introduces not only an engaging series hero in Inspector Gamache, who commands his forces---and this series---with integrity and quiet courage, but also a winning and talented new writer of traditional mysteries in the person of Louise Penny.

"I read it a few years back. At the beginning I thought it was kinda slow( I gave it two tries before just dropping it), but it clicked at last. It’s a series and I enjoy them very much."

"This is a tough one to review without spoilers. It’s also a bit of an unusual book despite being an otherwise cozy pastoral mystery. Penny allows her characters to not all have happy endings, to not all be fixed or improved. Gamache is almost a little TOO decent but I look forward to getting to know him better in future books - and it’s lovely to read about a decent person for once. This was a tough mystery to fully solve and I only managed hints along the way - but most of the book isn’t really ABOUT the mystery anyway. The most important part is the characters. I’ll be re-reading this one for the lovely bits of wisdom scattered throughout. Some of the secondary characters are more caricatured than ideal, especially the gay couple, but I suspect that may be a factor of this book being fifteen years old. A lot has changed societally even in that short a time. I highly recommend this book and was absolutely gripped for the last third!"

"2016 Reading Challenge: A Book I Previously Abandoned. I have the habit of never abandoning books - no matter how bad they are - so I didn't have a ton to choose from for this category. I think I abandoned this one because my electronic check out expired before I could finish it and I moved on to something else. At any rate, I didn't hate it and did end up liking some of the characters. May read the second one to see if it answers some of the unanswered questions in this one (Nichol??)"

"I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more in the series. I don't know if it's officially considered in the genre of "cozies," but it seems to be that to me; this series set in Quebec has interesting, believable characters with whom I enjoyed spending time. The "whodunnit" aspect seemed pretty well-balanced: not blatantly obvious from the beginning but also not a complete left-turn when you find out who did dunnit. And I don't think that's a spoiler.

I've already downloaded the next book to my Kindle and look forward to some quiet reading days over my upcoming vacation!"
"The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is one of my more recent favorites, also the Four Winds by same. Been reading a long time. The Dublin Murder series by Tana French is excellent."

"What is it about murders in sleepy villages that I love so much? I've not read anything by Louise Penny but she's been recommended to me since I love mysteries. I was definitely impressed, though I'm a little disappointed that I didn't figure it out! I plan to read more of this series, it was a wonderful addition to my reading repertoire."
