"A romp-filled and refreshingly diverse historical romance."--Buzzfeed Paris, 1889 The Exposition Universelle is underway, drawing merchants from every corner of the globe...including Luz Alana Heith-Benzan, heiress to the Caña Brava rum empire. Luz Alana set sail from Santo Domingo armed with three hundred casks of rum, her two best friends and one simple rule: under no circumstances is she to fall in love. In the City of Lights, she intends to expand the rum business her family built over three generations, but buyers and shippers alike can't imagine doing business with a woman...never mind a woman of color. This, paired with being denied access to her inheritance unless she marries, leaves the heiress in a very precarious position. Enter James Evanston Sinclair, Earl of Darnick, who has spent a decade looking for purpose outside of his father's dirty money and dirtier dealings. Ignoring his title, he's built a whisky brand that's his biggest--and only--passion. That is, until he's confronted with a Spanish-speaking force of nature who turns his life upside down. From their first tempestuous meeting, Luz Alana is conflicted. Why is this titled--and infuriatingly charming--Scottish man so determined to help her? For Evan, every day with Luz Alana makes him yearn for more than her ardent kisses or the marriage of convenience that might save them both. But Luz Alana sailed for Paris prepared to build her business and her future; what she wasn't prepared for was love finding her. "Herrera excels at propelling the romance genre and its form forward, and this book is no exception... Herrera is crafting swoony historical romances that aren't afraid to engage with the realities of the 19th-century while still making a bid for hard-earned happily-ever-afters."--Entertainment Weekly Can't get enough of the Las Leonas? "So fun! I love a historical romance that’s clearly deeply researched but never loses sight of the relationship between the characters. Luz Alana is a fantastic heroine - smart, fierce, and independent. Super diverse, pretty steamy, low on angst. A great pick for fans of Courtney Milan and anyone who watched Bridgerton and wants to try reading historical romance. "
"A little too raunchy for the Victorian era. Luz Alana’s mother and then father died (Scottish heritage who married and lived in Santa Domingo) leaving behind a younger sister for her to care for, an inheritance that she cannot access due to being a woman, but, fortunately, the Caribbean rum business. Luz Alana goes to Paris in an attempt to sell her rum in the European market for income. She is rejected for being a woman. She then bumps into a Scottish earl, James Sinclair, who she instantly dislikes. However, James needs to get control of his late mother’s brandy business, which was left to him in the will on the condition that he gets married. James is influential and will help Luz Alana sell her rum and get her inheritance in Scotland, but in turn for a short marriage until he gets control of the brandy business. However, in their fake marriage, they fall in love, something they both promised to never do. They realize they are in love when the attorney who had managed Luz Alana’s trust attempted to kill her in hopes of keeping control of her fund. James saves her and they stay happily married. "

"A historical romance featuring diverse characters and set in my favorite city in the world?!? Sign me up! I’ve been pretty open about not always loving historical romance, but this one showed me that it can still be really modern in expression and relentlessly feminist, while still including fan favorite tropes like a marriage of convenience.

I enjoyed the hell out of this, and while I can’t promise I’ll always be in the mood to read historical romance, I will look to read more from this author!"
