God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater is Kurt Vonnegut’s funniest satire, an etched-in-acid portrayal of the greed, hypocrisy, and follies of the flesh we are all heir to.“A brilliantly funny satire on almost everything.”—Conrad Aiken“[Vonnegut was] our finest black humorist. . . . "Somehow I've managed to attain the ripe old age of 48 without reading any Vonnegut novels! I decided to rectify the situation with _Mr Rosewater_, and found it enjoyable, funny but not as earth-shaking or revelatory as I'd expected. Despite my own knee-jerk liberal tendencies, Vonnegut's tendency to create evil capitalistic straw men struck me as a bit silly, nearly as bad in its way as Ayn Rand's socialist ones. What was biting satire in 1965 now feels...quaint.Even the "Pearls Before Swine" references seemed like vague allusions to Bunuel's Viridiana.

Perhaps one needs to read Vonnegut before middle age blight sets in. I'll try again with Slaughterhouse 5."
