"Fear and Loathing in America and The Rum Diary"

"I've tried on several different occasions to read this novel and four or five of my previous attempts ended in disaster - meaning I'd get halfway through the novel, not remember anything I'd just read, and ultimately end up tossing it aside in favor of something much more interesting.

I read this book, finally, because I had a friend read it with me. We'd read a pre-determined number of pages and meet up in a steam chat to discuss what we read. Needless to say, this is my friends kind of book...and not even close to mine.

This novel has twists and turns in it that leave a reader confused, to put it in the way of another reviewer: "Reading drug writing is about as interesting is watching paint dry." I kept waiting for the beat to drop, hoping that there'd ultimately be some point to the ****** up fever dream described within the pages, but I waited in vain. There was nothing, only this overwhelming sense of confusion, frustration, and outright anger as confusion and frustration are wont to cause.

I understand Hunter S. Thompson was a scholar and a gentleman, but this novel does little in the way of proving these things about him. It actually does little for making me want to read other books written by him, as well. I put off writing my review because I was consciously aware of the number of fanboys this novel has - these people who worship his writings and consider him revolutionary in the field of memoirs, provocative thought, and hidden meanings - but let me say this, I read ******* romance novels and found this to be drivel.

To each their own."
