Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel • Discover the novel that launched one of science fiction’s most beloved, acclaimed, and awarded trilogies: Kim Stanley Robinson’s masterly near-future chronicle of interplanetary colonization. “A staggering book . . . the best novel on the colonization of Mars that has ever been written.”—Arthur C. Clarke For centuries, the barren, desolate landscape of the red planet has beckoned to humankind. Now a group of one hundred colonists begins a mission whose ultimate goal is to transform Mars into a more Earthlike planet. They will place giant satellite mirrors in Martian orbit to reflect light onto its surface. Black dust sprinkled on the polar caps will capture warmth and melt the ice. And massive tunnels drilled into the mantle will create stupendous vents of hot gases. But despite these ambitious goals, there are some who would fight to the death to prevent Mars from ever being changed.

"This was a great book, can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy!"

"I honestly think this book was better on the Re-read. I don't know why the first time I read the book it felt overly technical and very dry when it is most definitely not. I ended up abandoning the series but after reading a few other KSR books, I found a new appreciation for his style and wanted to get back to the Mars trilogy. Red Mars is an amazing first book. It tells the story of the first 100 humans to colonize Mars from their journey over on the spaceship and all the hardships once they have made planetfall. The book is like a long-running soap opera, and you are excited when a character you haven’t heard from in a while comes back with some crazy story. On the ship you are introduced to each of the characters, their personality type and what they do. Once they land, they begin to make a new world for themselves, but they begin to splinter into cliques based off relationships, dreams for mars and political ideology. I don’t want to give anything away, but things are crazy on earth, things get crazy on mars, and the original 100 find a way to come together despite all their differences. This was a great read and perfect for fans of drama, adventure, and science. I’m excited to continue on with Green and Blue Mars."
"It felt like a realistic account of how a colonization of Mars would actually go down. "
