With Extinction, #1 New York Times bestselling author Douglas Preston has written a page-turning thriller in the Michael Crichton mode that explores the possible and unintended dangers of the very real efforts to resurrect the woolly mammoth and other long-extinct animals.Erebus Resort, occupying a magnificent, hundred-thousand acre valley deep in the Colorado Rockies, offers guests the experience of viewing woolly mammoths, Irish Elk, and giant ground sloths in their native habitat, brought back from extinction through the magic of genetic manipulation. When a billionaire's son and his new wife are kidnapped and murdered in the Erebus back country by what is assumed to be a gang of eco-terrorists, Colorado Bureau of Investigation Agent Frances Cash partners with county sheriff James Colcord to track down the perpetrators. As killings mount and the valley is evacuated, Cash and Colcord must confront an ancient, intelligent, and malevolent presence at Erebus, bent not on resurrection—but extinction.

"I wasn't sure what to expect here, a mystery with Dinosaurs? Anyhow I enjoyed this book and glad to have gone into it blind. It kept my interest throughout. There is definitely some mystery, lore, action, suspense. We get a variety of characters, some are more likable then others. This was a fun read, give it a shot. "
""“Sort of like Jurassic Park?” Cash asked. A sudden frown. “Nothing like Jurassic Park,” Karman reacted harshly. “Jurassic Park was bad fiction and bad science. Do not talk to me about Jurassic Park!” He almost spit out the name. “What we do here is real.”"
Erubus is a resort where the very rich pay to see de-extincted animals like the wooly mammoth and giant sloth. When two newly weds are brutally murdered while camping in the resort's back country, CBI Agent Cash is given her first case as Agent in Charge.
The book has a similar premise as Jurassic Park, but cleverly uses the murders and the case to stand apart.
The characters are well developed and not always likable.
The character I was sure would get killed made it out alive. The one I thought would make it out didn't. Even when I knew something was about to happen, I was surprised by what actually happened.
I liked the plug for Preston and Child's book, Bloodless.
My content warnings include-
Blood and gore
Murder of a baby animal
Cursing
Definitely recommended for anyone who liked Jurassic Park and anyone who likes science with their mystery (both the forensic and genetic varieties). I hope Preston writes more books about these characters."

"<strong>Great read with an interesting view</strong><br/><br/>I love the combination of science and mystery. It poses the question if you can recreate extinct animals, should you? And how far is too far when it comes to the knowledge and possibilities that science discovers.<br/>It was so good it seemed to move too quickly. And the ending makes me wonder if they'll be a sequel."
