Her arrival coincides with an explosion of activity—artists colonize a deserted and industrial SoHo, stage actions in the East Village, blur the line between life and art. Reno is submitted to a sentimental education of sorts—by dreamers, poseurs, and raconteurs in New York and by radicals in Italy, where she goes with her lover to meet his estranged and formidable family. Ardent, vulnerable, and bold, Reno is a fiercely memorable observer, superbly realized by Rachel Kushner.

"I bought this book for the sole reason that George Saunders mentioned it as a great book in an interview. At the time, I assumed that meant it would likely be like Saunders writing. That was a stupid assumption to make, because of course writers don't just read material like they write.

I can't give it the praise Saunders does, but it was an interesting read. There is a theme of other reviews that parts are very well written, and other parts drag. I would agree with this, though I am not sure I would have picked up on why I wasn't enjoying it as much if I had not read so many reviews after taking far too long to finish it. I had a very difficult time getting into the story at first, and I think I misunderstood large swaths of it in the beginning.

Maybe I was just to dumb for The Flamethrowers."
