"The Armada is a LONG and very detailed account of the struggle for dominance between Spain and England in the 1500s. Interesting, but it drags on for hundreds of pages! The most interesting thing I got from this book is that Mattingly claims that England was able to fend off Spain because of it's superior nautical and cannon technology. And because Spain had leaky barrels and thus was not properly provisioned. Comparing Elizabeth to Philip is interesting... Philip was driven, ambitious, and maybe a bit delusional. Elizabeth seems to have waffled back and forth on nearly everything but was somehow victorious in the end. Still a bit of a mystery to me."
