Jane the Virgin meets To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before in this charming debut romantic comedy filled with Black Girl Magic. Perfect for fans of Mary H. K. Choi and Nicola Yoon, with crossover appeal for readers of Jasmine Guillory and Talia Hibbert romances. Sixteen-year-old Tessa Johnson has never felt like the protagonist in her own life. She’s rarely seen herself reflected in the pages of the romance novels she loves. The only place she’s a true leading lady is in her own writing—in the swoony love stories she shares only with Caroline, her best friend and #1 devoted reader. When Tessa is accepted into the creative writing program of a prestigious art school, she’s excited to finally let her stories shine. But when she goes to her first workshop, the words are just...gone. Fortunately, Caroline has a solution: Tessa just needs to find some inspiration in a real-life love story of her own. And she’s ready with a list of romance novel-inspired steps to a happily ever after. Nico, the brooding artist who looks like he walked out of one of Tessa’s stories, is cast as the perfect Prince Charming. But as Tessa checks each item off Caroline’s list, she gets further and further away from herself. She risks losing everything she cares about—including the surprising bond she develops with sweet Sam, who lives across the street. She’s well on her way to having her own real-life love story, but is it the one she wants, after all?

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 My heart <3 I really enjoyed this book! It took me out of my reading slump and took me through many emotions, tearing up a few times, the happiness, giddiness, the cringe, and truly wishing for a happily ever after for her. I thought it was well written and wasn’t overpowering in one way or another in the sense of too much description or not enough description. The layering, the nuances, the representation were all chefs kiss *insert chef’s kiss emoji here*. I felt how she wrote the story was just enough of that makes sense. Even though it was first person, I felt more like a big sister reading a journal than related to the character. The character is just more timid and of course a teen (who hasn’t made terrible love decisions as a teen?), so I felt very empathetic and understanding of her choices even if I didn’t 1000% or even like 25% agreed with them. I can see how her actions can annoy or upset people, but maybe because I came from a perspective of an older sister I wanted to give her a hug and tell her it was going to be alright. I did want more in terms of the ending. I just personally don’t love when it ends as a “you kinda know what this leads to and let you’re imagination run.” I’m very “give me what you were going to write about how they are thriving.” Overall I really enjoyed the book, super cute and adorable gave me butterflies <3 I can’t wait to read more of her books! "Overall, this book was SUPER cute and I absolutely adored reading it (especially all the amazing mentions of food!). There were moments where I was so frustrated with Tessa’s character, but I think looking at this book at a whole, really gave me a better understanding of her character & appreciation.
It also didn’t help that when it came to Tessa’s relationship with writing, I definitely related to aspects of it - so I was like “Tessa, why are you making these choices?!”
But just like Tessa in the end, I’m definitely inspired to write after reading this!"
"Super fun to read! I read this in like 8th grade after I was done taking a big end of the year test. It was honestly what really got me in to reading romance. I just saw it on a shelf at target and thought the cover was cute, I liked the title, and the back sounded promising. It was honestly super fun and I really enjoyed it."
