"Maybe because I took a break in the middle, but this was WAY too slow of a burn for me. That’s not to say it lacks action; plenty of Things Happen. But somehow they’re not very interesting? I find a character-driven story tends to give more meaning to the plot and I couldn’t get a mental grip on any of the three protagonists till near the end, and only then just barely. I keep feeling like this series has such POTENTIAL and then not living up to it. I’m hoping book three weaves some much more interesting threads and finally brings the slow simmer of character development to fruition. Either that or finally creates a likeable character? I WANT to like Bartimaeus but just can’t quite get there due to him being more or less evil - though I’m beginning to feel like maybe we can get to know him properly eventually.

Ultimately this was a profound MEH."

"I loved this book better than the first one. I loved how the author created the main characters. While reading the book, I loved and hated all three of them; Kitty, John and Bartimaeus. I really liked Honorius too! He was a really good plot twist in the middle. Overall it was a really good book, more action than in the Amulet of Samarkand."
"Talk about a blast from the past, been years since I read that book! Entire series is definitely worth a reread. My favorite book right now is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Not new by a long shot anymore but it has that fantasy and magic that pulls you into a different world as well as a healthy dose of humor that I can actually relate to"
