"*Minor spoilers* I was on the fence whether to like or dislike the book. The world is amazing and well thought out without being too complicated. The writing is very good. However, I didn’t like the characters. The fact that the student fell in love with her teacher after only one month of knowing him? Plus the whole power imbalance. Some people might enjoy teacher-student relationships but I’m not a fan."

"I love this book (and series!). Whimsical magic, a well thought out plot, and dimensional and likeable characters ⚠️TRIGGER WARNING BELOW ⚠️ #triggerwarning
This book discusses briefly but explicitly self harm and suicide (one of the MCs found her friend dead previous to the events of the book and discusses once) #selfharm #suicide #trigger #triggerwarnings "
"Previously having enjoyed Caraval, Night Circus, and The Atlas Six I was drawn to this book for what I suspected was a unique take on magic. I found it an easy read, no complex lore or world building that required extensive background. Some elements felt a bit rushed but overall I enjoyed the book and will be continuing the series."
"<strong>Mediocre </strong><br/><br/>Normally I do not write such long reviews but this book really bothered me. It had so much potential and it really hooked me at the start. It is sad to say I was severely disappointed. I honestly don’t think I’ll even read the others in the series (which is very hard for me to not finish a story). <br/><br/>This is a story about a young women training to become a magician. All she wanted in life was to become a magician and now she is getting her wish, however, not in the way she had hoped. She grudgingly agrees to become a paper magician and will be taught by Magician Emery Thanes. Before any real learning can start Magician Thanes gets his heart stolen by a evil women. The rest of the story is about the journey Ceony goes on to retrieve his heart. <br/><br/>I actually really enjoyed the first 30% of the story. It was a well told story with very interesting characters. I especially like Emery Thanes and was excited to see where the story would go. Before anything more can develop between the characters and the story, Thanes gets his heart stolen. After this, a majority of the story is about Ceony and reliving Thanes flash backs/doubts. I found this part of the story extremely boring and redundant. I would have much preferred more relationship development between the characters than one sided flash backs. <br/><br/>The amount of time it took for Ceony to develop feeling for Thanes was incredibly short. First Ceony dislikes Thanes then she kinda likes him then she loves him, all within a month (the last one was within 24 hours actually). This really bothered me because there was so much story build up in the beginning of the book and it was actually really good. Then all the sudden feeling and events a flying around so fast your head spins, all while nothing is actually happening. <br/><br/>I had really hoped to enjoy this book but it just wasn’t meant to be."

"I had somehow taken this book off of my to-read list; don’t even know how it happened, but it wandered over onto my ‘not now’ list and languished there. VERY unique world building, definitely liked it, BUT. There was one part of the book that was just needlessly, endlessly long -- I understand the reason for it, it allowed us to get a great view of Thane’s past, but dude, I ended up skimming almost all of it."
