The students at the River Valley School for the Deaf just want to hook up, pass their history finals, and have politicians, doctors, and their parents stop telling them what to do with their bodies. This revelatory novel plunges readers into the halls of a residential school for the deaf, where they’ll meet Charlie, a rebellious transfer student who’s never met another deaf person before; Austin, the school’s golden boy, whose world is rocked when his baby sister is born hearing; and February, the hearing headmistress, a CODA (child of deaf adult(s)) who is fighting to keep her school open and her marriage intact, but might not be able to do both. As a series of crises both personal and political threaten to unravel each of them, Charlie, Austin, and February find their lives inextricable from one another—and changed forever. This is a story of sign language and lip-reading, disability and civil rights, isolation and injustice, first love and loss, and, above all, great persistence, daring, and joy. Absorbing and assured, idiosyncratic and relatable, this is an unforgettable journey into the Deaf community and a universal celebration of human connection.

"I may be biased as an ASL interpreter but this book was EVERYTHING!! 😍😍 I had high hopes, and wow it was even better! Everyone should have this on their TBR list, and educators at the very least should be required to read it! The author did an AMAZING job not only with the storyline itself, but also putting so much Deaf culture, history, and info in it too, but managed to make it interesting instead of like you're reading a history lesson. 100/10 by far my favorite book to date! 12/3. Hoping for a sequel 🤞🏼🙌🏼 #champ "
"I think most of our society would benefit from reading this book. I learned so much about Deaf culture, and I feel better informed about the nuances of ASL/BASL and cochlear implants than ever I would have just from snippets of news here and there, thanks to the author’s deft handling of these tense subject matters. I found the “wiki” history entries and ASL lessons extremely helpful, and the story engaged me in ways I didn’t expect.

I appreciated the multiple perspectives we got throughout the novel, and I think in particular the teenage characters were done really well. It felt believable while also being educational, and I think all the best books should teach you something, either about yourself or about something new. This did both, and I hope that others feel the same!"

"One of the best books I’ve ever read. It gives a nice amount of asl history and even has some signs in the book! The characters are easy to relate to and Novic did an amazing job at tackling issues between Deaf culture and hearing culture. You might find the end as incomplete but if you read the author’s explanation at the end of the book, you’ll understand why it’s written with a kind of ending where the reader gets to decide the ending. "I wish this book was getting more love than what I've been seeing. It's a quick, informative, heartfelt story about life struggles that the hearing community can't not fully comprehend. The struggles of parents and choosing what's "right", loving family, first loved and companionship. Great book."
