Terpning, the storyteller of the Plains Indians, presents his most important paintings of the past 35 years Howard Terpning is one of the most lauded painters of Western art and considered by many to be a national treasure. He is known as the "storyteller of the Native American" because of his devotion to and respect for his subject matter, almost exclusively the Plains Indian. He particularly favors the period beginning in the late eighteenth century when a Great Plains culture of Indians and horses thrived along with the buffalo.
