New York Times Bestseller"Hypnotic and darkly funny. . . . Belongs to a particular strain of American gothic that encompasses The Twilight Zone, Stephen King and Twin Peaks, with a bit of Tremors thrown in." —The Guardian“A splendid, weird, moving novel.”— NPR.orgFrom the creators of the wildly popular Welcome to Night Vale podcast comes an imaginative mystery of appearances and disappearances that is also a poignant look at the ways in which we all struggle to find ourselves. . . no matter where we live.Located in a nameless desert somewhere in the great American Southwest, Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all commonplace parts of everyday life. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge.Nineteen-year-old Night Vale pawn shop owner Jackie Fierro is given a paper marked "KING CITY" by a mysterious man in a tan jacket holding a deer skin suitcase. Everything about him and his paper unsettles her, especially the fact that she can't seem to get the paper to leave her hand, and that no one who meets this man can remember anything about him. Jackie is determined to uncover the mystery of King City and the man in the tan jacket before she herself unravels.Night Vale PTA treasurer Diane Crayton's son, Josh, is moody and also a shape shifter. And lately Diane's started to see her son's father everywhere she goes, looking the same as the day he left years earlier, when they were both teenagers. Josh, looking different every time Diane sees him, shows a stronger and stronger interest in his estranged father, leading to a disaster Diane can see coming, even as she is helpless to prevent it.Diane's search to reconnect with her son and Jackie's search for her former routine life collide as they find themselves coming back to two words: "KING CITY". It is King City that holds the key to both of their mysteries, and their futures...if they can ever find it.

"A GREAT READ!! I have always loved the podcast and finally decided to read the book. It gives off the same strange and unreal feeling you get when you listen to the podcast. I filled out a beautiful and creepy world. Where the sun is hot and librarians might just try to eat you alive. It talks about the struggles of being a single mom too. I would highly suggest listening to the audiobook, it feeds into the vibes."
"KING CITY, The paper said. That is all the book said. I don't know why i had it but that is what it said. haha. But seriously, I went into this not knowing what to expect. I thought it was going to be adventures with Cecil and Carlos. Boy was I wrong. Dead wrong. I am glad I was. I listened to the audiobook because it helps. Jackie Fierro is the best Female protagonist I've ever seen in a book. It was the way that she was written, as a strong independent woman who wasn't really focused on love. She was more focused on turning 20. She had been 19 for years, decades, even centuries maybe. I enjoy how strong of a character she is. Her friendship with Diane is interesting and I enjoy the banter between the two. If this were a movie, this would overwhelmingly pass the Bechdel test I also quite enjoy getting to see things from the perspective of an outsider because on the podcast, you hear stuff from Cecil's POV. But in this, it is different. It is told from a 3rd person omniscient narrator perspective. Also the origin of the man in the tan jacket has been racking my brain for 3 years since I started listening so thank god we finally got background! :-) All in all I really enjoyed the book. Joseph and Jeffrey did a great job and I would like to see other books in the future!!!!!"

"Life is too short to read this book. I may have forced myself to finish it when I was 17 (for example Giles Goat Boy by John Barth) but not now....."
