Brandon Sanderson
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson—creator of the smash-hit science fiction and fantasy series Skyward, The Stormlight Archive, and Mistborn—comes a new science fiction adventure.A man awakens in a clearing in what appears to be medieval England with no memory of who he is, where he came from, or why he is there. Chased by a group from his own time, his sole hope for survival lies in regaining his missing memories, making allies among the locals, and perhaps even trusting in their superstitious boasts. His only help from the “real world” should have been a guidebook entitled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England, except his copy exploded during transit. The few fragments he managed to save provide clues to his situation, but can he figure them out in time to survive?Note from Brandon:Sometimes an idea just won’t let go of you for years. The initial seed of this novel was the title that eventually turned into The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England. At first there was no story to go with that title, but I wrote it down and kept coming back to it, wondering what that book could possibly be about. Something else I thought about off and on for years was the classic concept of a man waking up in another time and another place, with no idea how he got there. It was when those two ideas came together, and I placed a book with that title into that man’s hands, that this novel was born. I hope you’ll have as much fun with it as I did!

"It was okay. It was more science fiction than fantasy (although there were definitely fantasy elements) which was a surprise. At times I felt like it was trying a bit too hard to be clever/funny. The best part was the end. It took awhile to get there, but the last third of the book was exciting and the conclusion was satisfying. "

"3.75 stars

It started out kind of confusing and slow, but about a third of the way through it started picking up and I did enjoy it.

It’s not my favorite of Sanderson’s worldbuilding- it was a bit confusing and some parts (like people from Earth having a weird effect on beings from the book’s dimension) didn’t make a ton of sense, but overall it was enjoyable and fun.

I always love a character finally standing up for themselves and becoming a new person, and John’s character development was really good.

It’s *almost* 4 stars, but because I still feel confused it’s not quite there.

CWs: Blood, violence/ gun violence, kidnapping, death, injury/injury detail, murder, colonization, minor suicide attempt"
"CW: sarcasm, mild violence, mild gore, some others

What happens if you plop a modern man (or, futuristic man, by current standards) into medieval times, wipe his memory, and leave him to his own devices? Lots of fun things, apparently.

Have you ever wanted to read a Douglas Adams book, but set somehow simultaneously in both the future and the past? Then this is the book for you. Our MC wakes up in a burning field, with no memory of who he is, where he is, or how he got there. As he slowly tries to piece together his life, he somehow also has to figure out how to survive in an era he definitely wasn’t prepared for. After all, who wears jeans under their cloak?

A historical-ish fiction with a distinctly sci-fi twist, Sanderson packs an incredible amount of humor into every chapter. I spent most of the book with a smile on my face, if I wasn’t outright laughing. It was easily the funniest book I’ve read in a while, and I already want to read it again. At the same time, the story was interesting and I was invested in what was going to happen next. The MC is probably the best sort of unreliable narrator, and his rating system is glorious (5 stars, would read his reviews again).

If you like snark and outrageous circumstances, combined with just a little bit of magic and the old gods (but the other old gods, not our old gods), then you definitely need to check out this book. I would love to see more of these ‘secret projects’ from Sanderson in the future."
