The Birth House is the story of Dora Rare, the first daughter to be born in five generations of Rares. As a child in an isolated village in Nova Scotia, she is drawn to Miss Babineau, an outspoken Acadian midwife with a gift for healing. Dora becomes Miss B.’s apprentice, and together they help the women of Scots Bay through infertility, difficult labours, breech births, unwanted pregnancies and even unfulfilling sex lives. Filled with details as compelling as they are surprising, The Birth House is an unforgettable tale of the struggles women have faced to have control of their own bodies and to keep the best parts of tradition alive in the world of modern medicine.

"If you enjoy historical fiction this has everything. A 1900’s tale of a young girl learning the ways of the Midwife during a time when there’s a shift in mindset and medical delivery. Throw in a pandemic, and living in rural Nova Scotia where even electricity is a commodity this is a very enlightening tale. The subject matter is well researched and delivered to the reader beautifully. "

"This is honestly my favourite book. Any time I see a copy in a thrift shop I buy it and gift it to someone I love. I introduced it to my book club and everyone was enchanted, unable to put it down. That was the first time we all agreed that the chosen book was a masterpiece. I recommend it to everyone, all the time. Read this. Cherish it. Share it with all your friends. "
