It’s the perfect book to look back at all you may have missed or to jump-start you on a second viewing of the whole series. As an entertainment correspondent, Renfro has covered the show’s premieres, broken down key details in scenes, explored characters’ histories, and interviewed the cast, directors, and crew. In this book, she sheds new light on the themes, storylines, character development, the meaning of the finale, and what you can expect next. Some of the questions answered here include: What was the Night King’s ultimate purpose? How did the show effect George R.R. Martin’s ability to finish the book series? Why were the final seasons shorter? Why did the direwolves get shortchanged? How were the fates of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen foretold from the start? Was that really a bittersweet ending? Winter may have come and gone, but there is still plenty to discover and obsess over in this behind-the-scenes fan guide to the Game of Thrones HBO series.

"Renfro, an entertainment journalist, does a decent job of recounting the origins of the iconic fantasy series and its translation to HBO phenomenon. Early chapters on the geography of Westeros, significant quotes, and the use of music and costumes in the productions are intriguing (I especially liked her detailed observations on the costume evolution of the three leading female characters); and Renfro is great at explicating the importance of character development across book and film. Her behind the scenes details of life on set (who knew that the entire cast lived in Belfast four months a year, with their kids in local schools?) are fascinating, and it's clear how attached the actors became to their characters (there's a great chapter on how everyone reacted to learning about their character's deaths).<br/><br/> Unfortunately, the book gets bogged down in the endless yowling over the final 2 seasons of the show, which were not based on George R R Martin's books (because he hasn't written them yet). Although the plot differences between book and show are interesting, the lengthy recitation of various fan theories and snits are not. Renfro really has little to say in her final chapters other than, "Some of that stuff may have come from Martin. But then again a lot of it didn't. And it might be different in the books. Or not."<br/><br/>A terrific romp for fans, although not truly a "guide": no maps, family trees, plot summaries or character profiles, although Renfro DOES explain a lot of the backstory to the Tagaryen/Lannister/Stark battle which begins the story."
