A STUNNING NEW WORK OF HISTORICAL FANTASY, J. M. MIRO'S ORDINARY MONSTERS INTRODUCES READERS TO THE DARK, LABYRINTHINE WORLD OF THE TALENTS England, 1882. In Victorian London, two children with mysterious powers are hunted by a figure of darkness—a man made of smoke. Sixteen-year-old Charlie Ovid, despite a brutal childhood in Mississippi, doesn't have a scar on him. His body heals itself, whether he wants it to or not. Marlowe, a foundling from a railway freight car, shines with a strange bluish light. He can melt or mend flesh. When a jaded female detective is recruited to escort them to safety, all three begin a journey into the nature of difference, and belonging, and the shadowy edges of the monstrous. What follows is a story of wonder and betrayal, from the gaslit streets of London, and the wooden theatres of Meiji-era Tokyo, to an eerie estate outside Edinburgh where other children with gifts - the Talents - have been gathered. There, the world of the dead and the world of the living threaten to collide. And as secrets within the Institute unfurl, Marlowe, Charlie and the rest of the Talents will discover the truth about their abilities, and the nature of what is stalking them: that the worst monsters sometimes come bearing the sweetest gifts. Riveting in its scope, exquisitely written, Ordinary Monsters presents a catastrophic vision of the Victorian world—and of the gifted, broken children who must save it.

"There is a lot going on in this book which at times seemed to be too much, but overall a great premise. It reminded me a lot of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children except so much of who and what you expect it to be is completely surprising. At no point did I know what to expect. It also allows you to see the story from different perspectives even the villain and who you thought was a hero which changes your perspective quite a bit "
"I liked this book, but it was not a total page turner for me. The premise was good, kids with special magical talents are identified and taken to a school in Scotland, where they join other kids with special abilities The mc's are two kids in the U.S. They are pursued by a monster that can manipulate shadows. Is this monster their only enemy?

"Overall it had a very dark academia/Mrs peregrines school for wayward children vibe. It did have a tendency towards being slow and while the characters were enjoyable it felt like huge chunks of the book were solely focused on specific ones where if it had been shorter and given others some time to shine as well it wouldnt have felt so long."
"It is a better read for young adults. The story centers around very young characters."

"i actually did enjoy this book although my mind did wander off at some points. sometimes it felt like certain information was repeated and not necessary. I did enjoy getting to know the backstory of the characters and everything, but some bits just felt stretched out. it was to me at least pretty slow pace until it hit sort of towards the end. I found the ending pretty good and I liked how action packed it was and I think I will be reading the next book when it releases. "
"The book overall was a fun read, though a bit of a task to get through occasionally because of the excessive detail. While I enjoy when a writer paints a scene with words, at points it was entirely too much that it muddied up the picture in my head. The different perspectives of several characters were a big part of what I enjoyed! The premise itself was also very interesting and fun, having a well enough defined magic/power system. However, not interesting enough for me to pick up the next book most likely. It just really didn't need to be 600+ pages to be honest; and assuming the next book will be about the same length, I don't care enough to continue."
