"When Maria finds out her girlfriend cheated on her, she spirals out of control, stealing her girlfriend's car and buying heroin before heading west on a journey of self-discovery. In Nevada, she meets James Hanson, and immediately realizes that James is also transgender, but doesn't realize it yet. The two travel to Reno together. Maria frequently lapses into long inner monologues throughout the book, reflecting on gender, heteronormativity, and social conditioning"--Wikipedia, viewed March 24, 2023.

"I was really excited to read this to gain perspective from a totally different point of view and life story than my own. However, I really didn’t like Maria or James, the two main characters. I found them both annoying and fairly immature. "

"This book is one I wish I had 10 years ago! The point of Maria’s character is that she tries to help someone who’s probably trans and doesn’t know it yet. The person who she tries to take under her wing is skeptical and even states so when she insinuates that he may be a closeted trans woman. The moral of the story is you can only help people who are willing to take it. Maria is a person many trans girls and guys in their late 20s wish we had. I know I do. I love this book, we need more adult fiction books w trans femme protagonists. There’s not enough in the world. I wish I could write fiction this well. I’m so sad I found this book so late (it was reissued by Macmillan this year after the rave reviews and awards it received back at its original publication in 2014) Thank you Imogen Binnie, you’re awesome"
"I know this book was written many years ago — and it had to be, given how well it channels the freshness of internet forums — but it really feels so present. Reminds me of Torrey Peters, and I know Torrey endorses this book greatly. The book's first half was my favorite — it creates a character so believable and alive, it's a joy to be in her head no matter how troubled she is. And the second half had me guessing the whole time. How fun. Imogen Binnie, keep 'em coming please!!

Thank you NetGalley for the free eARC!"
"A trans woman steals her girlfriend’s car and drives across the country. I love it because it’s the only book I’ve ever read that reflected some of my past relationships. Also the protagonist’s voice/wit is awesome. "
