In the first novel of the New York Times bestselling Temeraire series, a rare bond is formed between a young man and a dragon, and together they must battle in the Napoleonic Wars.“A terrifically entertaining fantasy novel.”—Stephen KingAerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain’s defense by taking to the skies . . . not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future–and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.“Just when you think you’ve seen every variation possible on the dragon story, along comes Naomi Novik. . . . "Charming characters, great historical fantasy premise, and human/dragon friendships. It’s great. There are some pacing issues (the book just kind of stops right after the climax), but overall I had fun with it in a way I haven’t with many books lately. Highly recommended for dragon-lovers."
"This is a wonderful read! It’s about a sea captain in her majesty’s Royal Navy who bonds to a dragon. Book 1 is great! book 2 is good. book 3 is ok. And I didn’t read past that."

"I loved this book. I could hardly put it down. The story was adorable and thrilling all at the same time. I loved every character and wanted more by the time I finished. I can't wait to read more of this series."

"I had not planned on reading this book right now (and I’m an extensive planner of my reading schedule), but the dual blow of SFF week on Goodreads and Dragon Week on Tor.com shot this one from the depths of my TBR pile straight to the top, because I cannot resist a good theme! I’ve been meaning to read this for a while (and to my surprise I actually own a Kindle copy...I literally had no idea it was on there), so the timing could not have been more perfect.

That being said, this was excellent! I’ve been on a run of alternative SFF historical novels (The Philosopher’s Flight and The Fated Sky are notable examples) and I love it! I don’t think I could have hated a book that featured the Napoleonic Wars with dragons; like come on, that’s my ideal kind of novel! Plus, I’ve never disliked anything that Naomi Novik has written, so I’m so happy to finally started the series. I can’t wait to read more, and luckily there are many more books in the series!"
