Nanea: Hula for the Home Front
Books | Juvenile Fiction / Girls & Women
Kirby Larson
Everything has changed since the war started. Nanea had hoped that going back to school would make life seem normal again. But it hasn't. There are still curfews and blackouts and constant reminders of war. Nanea's dear friend Donna had to leave Hawaii, and Nanea's big brother won't stop talking about joining the Army. She can't bear the thought of him far from home and in danger. In the swirl of changes, Nanea turns to hula. Dancing makes her feel better, and soon she learns how much it lifts the spirits of the soldiers, too. When a surprising hula partner boosts everyone's morale, Nanea gets a big idea.

"I thought it was very interesting for American Girl to have an overlap of another World War II era historical character. Molly was one of the three original characters released and her story centers around World War II as well. Nanea's story starts shortly before the occurrence of Pearl Harbor on Oahu and shows the Hawaiian perspective. I'm a huge history buff especially about World War II and was surprised that I actually learned a few things from this series. The main thing that really hit home was that Nanea is best friends with a Japanese-American girl. The series shows just a fraction of the struggles these people went through during the war but I think it's an important aspect that children should learn about not touched on in Molly's series."
