"Kamala Harris poignantly addresses the struggles we face as a society today - in detail - but she also presents a way forward.

Going into any politician’s memoir - I am skeptical of the intentions and convictions of the writer. Do they truly mean what they are saying? Or is it a re-election ploy to try to score up support from on the fence voters? Not so with The Truths We Hold.

Vice President Harris gives me hope because she sees the issues we face, fully, in all their brutal reality, and does not succumb to despair. She sees a way out and acts on it. She is a person of great integrity.

I found myself crying about every two minutes. Breaking out with a hopeless sob of despair. It was ugly. I have succumbed to pessimism and doom. I feel powerless, daily, by the minute. So much so that I’ve started to tuning out the suffering to preserve my own sanity. What’s the point of seeing suffering, of acknowledging it if you can’t do anything about it? Yet Harris would describe the event from start to finish - every ounce of individual suffering caused by systemic, communal problems.

…And then Kamala would raise her torch and present a way forward, a hope. That may sound cliche, but I have never felt so uplifted and empowered, politically, to make a difference in my community, and act to solve the issues I care about. I found myself brimming with ideas for small ways that could lead to larger changes in my own life and in my community.

Thank you for re-lighting my torch."
