A Seventeen Best Book of the YearA New York Public Library Top Ten Best Book of the YearA Kirkus Best Book of the YearFor fans of All the Bright Places, Looking for Alaska, and I'll Give You the Sun comes "a daring, inventive story about love and loss and longing, reminding us that every choice can be a new chance. A dazzling, not-to-be-missed debut." —Kathleen Glasgow, author of Girl in PiecesIn one impulsive moment the summer before they leave for college, overachievers Scarlett and David plunge into an irresistible swirl of romance, particle physics, and questionable decisions. Moving between the present and the past, this is the story of a grounded girl who's pulled into a lightning-strike romance with an electric-charged boy, and the enormity of the aftermath.Scarlett and David have known each other all their lives in small-town Colorado, where David is just another mountain in the background, until, one day, he is suddenly so much more than part of the scenery. David is magnetic, spontaneous, a gravitational force. And Scarlett, pragmatic, wry, eye on the future, welcomes the pull he has on her even as she resists it. Drawn to his wild energy, to the relief she feels in throwing off the weight of everyone’s expectations, Scarlett still can’t ignore the tug of her own hopes and ambitions, while David struggles between his feelings for her, which might be deeper than either of them will admit, and his own destructive impulses.Heartbreaking, hopeful, and unflinchingly honest, this is a deeply moving account of a girl dealing with grief and guilt, and learning to reconcile who she thinks she needs to be with the person she’s been all along. It’s an aching, transporting reminder that between the past that shapes us and the future ahead, we have only the present to forgive ourselves and forge ahead."Deeply authentic . . . "Wow. I knew from the title that this was most likely going to deal with heavy stuff. I just didn't think it was going to have a lot of it. It was kind of a slow build up but man was I hooked. It does go from present to past for the whole book, in which I kind of didn't like but it was okay. I had tried so hard to keep my tears in while reading this. The characters are smart in general but they were just kind of impulsive sometimes. I definitely liked this one a lot. Great read!"
"Words cannot describe how much I loved this book. It took some time for me to really ease into the story, I only began feeling less like a chore to read around page 50. The flipping between timelines caught me off guard but I got used to it and it became a lot easier to understand towards the middle.
The story was beautiful, tackling themes of drug abuse, grief, loss, forgiving yourself. I don’t regret taking a chance on this book. Check other reviews for a more in depth analysis, because this isn’t it. I just wanted to share my thoughts after just reading the last page.
Definitely not a lighthearted and fluffy romance if that’s what you were looking for. I was more invested of the friendships, especially the one between David and Phoebe. Both characters were incredibly flawed but that’s what made them feel more human to me. I wish I could get another book from David’s perspective so I could understand him better. I guess the whole point was that Phoebe didn’t know what was going on, only what she had seen on the surface and what everyone knew.
Final thoughts:
just wow…"
