Lemony Snicket
After the sudden death of their parents, the three Baudelaire children must depend on each other and their wits when it turns out that the distant relative who is appointed their guardian is determined to use any means necessary to get their fortune. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are intelligent children. They are charming, and resourceful, and have pleasant facial features. Unfortunately, they are exceptionally unlucky. Imagine tales so terrible that as many as fifty million innocents have been ruined by them-tales so indelibly horrid that the New York Times bestseller list has been unable to rid itself of them for seven years. Now imagine if this scourge suddenly became available in a shameful new edition so sensational, so irresistible, so riddled with lurid new pictures that even a common urchin would wish for it. Who among us would be safe? -- Publisher description.

"I have not read any of the A Series of Unfortunate Events books as a kid, but they have always caught my eye at the bookstore. Now in my mid-twenties, I am making an effort to read the whole series.

I bought this book as a Christmas gift for my 10-year-old cousin who has recently become intrigued by books this year. Before gifting it to her, I wanted to read it so that she has someone to talk about it with (and maybe I will have a new book-buddy).

After reading this, I recommend this book to anyone who liked Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I this that The Bad Beginning would be a great introduction to middle-grade fiction/fantasy and rotten villains for any young reader, ages 8-10.

This is a story about three orphans, who's parents died in a fire in the family home. Now the children depend on each other and their individual strengths to outwit a sneaky man by the name of Count Olaf -- a man who is fraudulently posing as a distant relative for the purposes of stealing the kids' inheritance.

What I especially liked about The Bad Beginning is that although it's written for children, it doesn't "talk down" to their level; it is written for children to understand but in a tone that is informative and mature. The author also sneaks in some vocabulary lessons, which as a child I would have enjoyed (but as an adult, they can come across somewhat know-it-all/snobbish). Just remember the audience the book is written for if you feel this way.

Click to Read More Reviews
"
"Alright. Here's the thing with this book. I think, at least for this first book, that the show is a bit better. Before I get assassinated for stating that, let me explain myself. Because there really is only one reason while I think so.

The main antagonist, Count Olaf, is portrayed by Neil Patrick Harris in the TV show, and he does an excellent job at it. I re-watch the Series of Unfortunate TV show a lot. So I'm used to the funny and evil version of Olaf. Not the straight-up cynical one. I know some people might like a more scary villainy sort of antagonist, but I prefer the show version. The dry humor that riddles the show makes me laugh out loud multiple times an episode. Yes, that sort of humor does exist in the books, but I think the show just does it a little bit better. The books are a bit darker. And compared to the show, I like the slightly more light-hearted version more.

The characters are good. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are great protagonists and it's easy to sympathize with them. This book also makes you realize how capable they are, despite the fact they are very young. Their relationship with each other is adorable. If I didn't know how wacky things get latter, I would read on just because of them.

The plot is alright, nothing particularly noticeable, at least not yet. It gets a lot more confusing in the later books. This is just the start of something odd. Something very odd.

It's a great series to read. It'll take up time, but not too much. It usually takes me no more a day or two to read a book in this series. I'd recommend it if you want to have some fun."

No Olaf, no VFD.

If you're allergic to a thing, it is best not to put that thing in your mouth, particularly if the thing is cats

Just knowing that they could read made the Baudelaire orphans feel as if their wretched lives could be a little brighter

Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean that it's nonsense

THE WORLD IS QUIET HERE

"I don't have time to medically examine the Baudelaires, or shove my face into any best-known novels!"
"Wicked people never have time for reading. It's one of the reasons for their wickedness"

Twitter || Blog || Pinterest || Tumblr || Instagram || Facebook"
